KUCHING: Reading habits among Millennials and Generation Z (Gen Z) vary widely, shaped by accessibility, convenience, and personal preferences.

While some read for academic and professional growth, others turn to digital platforms like e-books and audiobooks for entertainment and self-improvement.

As technology advances, their reading habits continue to evolve, influencing how they consume and engage with information in the modern era.

To explore these trends, Sarawak Tribune spoke with individuals from diverse backgrounds to gain insights into reading in the digital age.

I read almost every day to stay updated with the latest news and information. I prefer e-books because they are more affordable and easily accessible on any device, no matter where I am. My primary motivation for reading is academic, as it helps expand my knowledge and deepen my understanding across various fields. Additionally, reading enhances my communication skills by enriching my vocabulary and improving my ability to express ideas effectively.

I read for entertainment almost every day and prefer e-books because they are more accessible on my phone and lighter than physical books. E-books also offer convenient features, such as bookmarks that allow me to resume reading easily. When using social media, I usually read for entertainment. However, if something piques my interest — such as a discussion on Twitter or a kidney specialist correcting a content creator on healthy food choices for breaking fast — I shift my focus to academic reading or staying updated with current information. From my experience, reading has helped me share information more confidently and expand my vocabulary, especially when debating or engaging in professional discussions.

I read for entertainment a few times a week, but for professional purposes, I read almost every day. While I prefer physical books, e-books have become more practical. Reading is part of my routine for entertainment, personal growth, and expanding my knowledge. I primarily read to stay updated with the latest information and for enjoyment. It also plays a key role in communication and self-confidence by enriching my vocabulary and enhancing critical thinking skills.

I often read for academic and professional purposes rather than for entertainment, as I find stories more engaging through videos or movies where I can see the actions unfold. Audiobooks are my top choice since I connect more with listening and watching than traditional reading. My motivation for reading comes mainly from academics, as most learning materials — such as books, pamphlets, and articles — require reading to absorb and understand information. I also read to stay updated with current events, which helps me answer higher-order thinking questions and develop strong sentence structures. However, my reading habits may evolve with technological advancements and the time constraints of daily life.

I read for both entertainment and academic purposes, though more often for entertainment, as I enjoy exploring new ideas and engaging stories. I prefer e-books because they are accessible, portable, and allow me to read in the dark without additional lighting. My motivation for reading comes from entertainment, self-improvement, and a desire to better understand the world. I mainly read to stay entertained and informed, with my focus shifting based on my needs and circumstances.
