KUCHING: The HSL Samarahan Marathon, renowned for its flat, fast course, will return on June 14 -15, promising an even bigger event this year.

With over 800 early bird registrations, including a rush for the half marathon slots, the event draws both elite runners and amateurs from across region with Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea expected to participate.

“I expect elite runners to return this year,” noting that the flat route enables top runners to surpass their personal bests.

“The flat route makes it accessible for amateurs to try longer distances. If you have never done a 21K or a full marathon, this is the best place to do it,” said HSL director Yu Ji, at a press conference in La Promenade Mall today.

The weekend kicks off with fun runs (6km and 3km) on the evening of June 14, followed by competitive events (42km, 21km, and 10km) on June 15, from 1am to 5.30am. Registration fees range from RM60 to RM139.

A fan favourite, the Best Costume Award, will again recognise the most creative outfits in the fun run categories, judged by guest influencers. This addition ensures participants of all levels have a chance to win.

Accommodation discounts and transport to the starting line are available through official hotel partners Citadin Uplands Kuching and Rume Hotel.

The race will start and finish at Hock Seng Lee’s La Promenade Mall, with scenic routes passing Tanjong Bako Road and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas). Over 200 volunteers will ensure the event runs smoothly, with pacer teams and essential support services for all runners.

HSL’s commitment to quality is reflected in their adoption of international race standards and the inclusion of finisher T-shirts for 21km and 42km participants.

HSL Events Coordinator Stephen Sunny highlighted that these initiatives aim to meet the needs of the running community.
