KUCHING: Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a useful tool in news delivery, particularly for lighter segments such as community stories, human interest pieces and entertainment.

Director-General of Broadcasting Malaysia Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman said while AI has its place in enhancing broadcast efficiency, serious news segments will continue to rely on human presenters to uphold quality and credibility in reporting.

“AI can support news delivery, but we still need human anchors for more serious reports,” he told the media after the closing of the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 here today.

Suhaimi also stressed the importance of feeding AI with sufficient and locally relevant data to ensure its output remains meaningful and accurate.

He said there was still a lot of information about Sarawak that was not available in existing databases.

“We need to teach AI with data that can be shared. There are many things about Sarawak that may not be in the system.

“If we want AI to serve us effectively, we must ensure it understands our local context,” he added.

He viewed technology adoption not as a burden but a necessary investment to remain competitive in a digital-first world.

“This is knowledge we cannot avoid. If we don’t harness it, we will fall behind. We must learn to use this technology wisely so that we become even better,” he said.

Suhaimi then reminded media professionals to embrace lifelong learning to stay relevant in an industry that is increasingly shaped by technological change.
