MIRI: More than 300 runners of diverse backgrounds gathered at Marina Park here today for the SOPMA Baton Run 2025, a charity event aimed at raising awareness and funds for Malaysia’s deaf sports community.
The run, organised by the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association, was held in anticipation of next year’s ‘Sukan Orang Pekak Malaysia’ (SOPMA), which will be hosted by Sarawak.
Architect, Jeffrey Phang, officiated the event on behalf of Sarawak’s Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.
Also in attendance were Miri Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang, organising chairperson Victor Hii, Sarawak Deaf Sports Association Deputy President, Alvin Yong, and event partner, Ryan Jee.
Speaking at the event, Phang conveyed Lee’s message, stressing that the SOPMA Baton Run is more than just a sporting occasion
It symbolises the determination and unity of the deaf community in Sarawak.
“The Baton Run highlights the spirit of resilience within the deaf community. It promotes not only health and fitness but also inspires self-confidence and pride among deaf athletes,” said Lee in his speech read by Phang.
Lee also praised the commitment and perseverance of Sarawak’s OKU (people with disabilities) athletes, who continue to compete at high levels despite numerous challenges.
He reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to social inclusivity, noting that no one, regardless of ability, should be left behind.
“Under the leadership of the Premier, we firmly believe in caring for every segment of society. The deaf and OKU communities deserve equal attention and support,” he said.
However, Lee acknowledged that collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) remains vital.
He called for more joint efforts between the government and civil society to ensure the well-being of marginalised groups.
To support the initiative, Lee announced a contribution of RM5,000 to the Sarawak Deaf Sports Association.
