KUCHING: Hundreds of river catfish, or more commonly known as ‘ikan baung’ to locals, were found dead and floating along the Sarawak River on Saturday (Sept 12), from Pengkalan Sapi to the area below Tun Salahuddin Bridge.
The dead fish were also seen drifting with the current towards the river steps near the Kuching Waterfront, with some found along other parts of the river stretch.
Checks found that the dead fish sighted along the affected area involved only the baung species.
The incident has raised concern among residents after images and videos of the dead fish went viral on social media.
However, the cause of the incident has yet to be officially determined, while various claims circulating online remain unverified.
The Sarawak Agriculture Department, through its Fisheries Section, also went to the location to conduct checks and collect fish samples for further examination.
Personnel from the Sarawak Rivers Board (LSS) were also present during the inspection.
The number of dead fish found along the river stretch is estimated to be in the hundreds, with some continuing to be carried away by the current.
To date, no official cause has been identified, pending further examination and analysis of the samples taken.
