KUCHING: Petrol-electric vehicles are a technological innovation that align with Sarawak’s commitment to building a sustainable and low-carbon future.
Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said transportation contributes significantly to carbon emissions, accounting for up to 18 per cent, especially in urban areas such as Kuching.
He further noted that electric vehicles (EVs) are the way forward to reduce carbon emissions, in line with the government’s policies.
“This is what my ministry is focusing on, and we have done a lot as far as environmental sustainability is concerned through policies and initiatives.
“For example, environmental audits, greenhouse gas reduction measures and emission reduction audits, which are very important, as well as our energy transition plan.
“We also have our hydrogen economy roadmap,” said Dr Hazland when delivering his speech at the launch of the Proton e.MAS 7 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) at Proton e.MAS Melinau EV, on Friday night (Mar 6).
He commended Melinau Auto Group and Proton on the launch of their latest hybrid model, which is Malaysia’s first dual-powered EV technology to be introduced in East Malaysia.
Dr Hazland also highlighted that petrol EVs are likely to serve as a transition method before moving towards a much better and more effective fuel source, namely hydrogen.
“It can be used for 10 to 15 years or more. Petrol EV is also a way for us to reduce carbon emissions. It is quite similar to the industry, for big industries, as well as for communities and houses.
“We can still make use of battery systems, battery-energy systems through solar and so on. But in the future, if anything lasts more than two weeks, batteries cannot be relied on because they are very expensive. And the way forward is, of course, hydrogen technology,” he said.
Melinau Auto Group’s Chief Executive Officer, David Yii said introducing the e.MAS 7 PHEV represents an important step forward in supporting Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, energy transition and low-carbon emission goals.
He added that Sarawak has positioned itself as one of the leading regions in Malaysia in advancing renewable energy, clean technology and sustainable economic development.
“Under the visionary leadership of the Sarawak Government, the state continues to champion initiatives that promote energy transition, environmental protection and responsible growth.
“The automotive industry is also undergoing a major transformation.
“Vehicles are no longer just a means of transportation; they are increasingly part of a broader ecosystem of energy, efficiency, sustainability and smart mobility,” said David.
