KUCHING: As Sarawak boldly positions itself in the global hydrogen arena, the Hydrogen Economy Forum (H2EF) 2025 will feature two influential voices shaping the global hydrogen narrative from distinct yet complementary perspectives.

Scheduled for May 13 to 14 at Hilton Kuching, Institutional Affairs and Communications director at the Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2), Alejandro Rojas Bruce, and Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Abdul Aziz Husain, will set the tone for a high-level dialogue.

Bruce, bringing a European perspective grounded in policy and industry alignment, and Abdul Aziz, offering strategic clarity of a government driving tangible progress, will converge on one key point: the hydrogen economy demands collaboration.

Under Abdul Aziz leadership, Sarawak has positioned itself as a first-mover in Asia’s hydrogen economy, investing boldly in hydrogen infrastructure, public transport initiatives, and large-scale export projects.

“Hydrogen is no longer a concept; it is a reality, and Sarawak is leading the charge.

“With over 20,000MW of renewable energy potential and 70 per cent of its power generated from hydroelectric sources, Sarawak is uniquely positioned to produce competitive green hydrogen.

“The Sarawak government is leveraging this advantage not only to decarbonise locally but also to become a regional hub for hydrogen production, through various initiatives such as the use of hydrogen in public transportation and the development of infrastructure for hydrogen mobility.

“Sarawak is ready, with infrastructure, policies and investment pathways that invite the world to collaborate with us,” he said in a press statement issued by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) today.

His call to action will highlight the need for governments, private sectors and research institutions to align on strategic investments that support hydrogen’s rapid scale-up.

Meanwhile for Bruce, hydrogen is not a promise for tomorrow; it’s a catalyst for today’s energy transition.

Representing one of Europe’s most active hydrogen associations, Bruce is driven by the transformative potential of renewable hydrogen in decarbonising industries and reinforcing energy security.

“Hydrogen is already shaping the present and defining the future of energy. But to reach its full potential, we need scale – scaling production, infrastructure and market mechanisms.

“My message for H2EF 2025 brings into focus the need for joint action across governments, industries and international partners.

“Sarawak has shown remarkable leadership in hydrogen within Southeast Asia.

“Its renewable energy foundation and proactive strategies make it an ideal partner in fostering global hydrogen development,” he said.

He envisions forums like H2EF as key to forging the collaborations and knowledge-sharing networks that will drive momentum in the years ahead.

The event is being organised by the Sarawak Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, the Federal Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, and Borneo Business Connect, with the support of BESarawak.

It serves as a regional platform to accelerate hydrogen adoption n Southeast Asia, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
