KUCHING: As space technology becomes more accessible, i-CATS University College (i-CATS) is using cube satellites to nurture a new generation of Malaysian space talents.
Known as CubeSats, these small modular satellites measure ten centimetres per unit, offering lower costs and faster development than traditional spacecraft.
“At i-CATS, students gain rare practical exposure,” said Ir Norhizam Hamzah, noting that CubeSat projects immerse learners in real engineering environments.
Originally designed for education, CubeSats now support environmental monitoring, forestry management, telecommunications, disaster response, agricultural planning, and in-orbit technology testing.
At i-CATS, CubeSat initiatives function as experiential learning platforms linking classroom theory with hands-on design, assembly, testing, and mission operations.
“Students follow the full satellite lifecycle, from concept to deployment, building discipline, teamwork, and confidence required by the aerospace industry,” he added.
The programme integrates industry partnerships, international collaboration, and applied research, ensuring alignment with global standards, regulations, and current professional practices.
Such exposure familiarises students with regulatory frameworks, documentation processes, and quality controls while encouraging knowledge transfer between academia and technology industries.
Despite their size, CubeSats serve as powerful research tools that promote innovation, evidence-based learning, and development of adaptable, future-ready technical professionals.
i-CATS is also developing data science and artificial intelligence applications, using satellite data to address real-world challenges and support Sarawak’s growing space ecosystem.
