KUCHING: Faculty of Aerospace Engineering I-CATS University College will develop and offer several academics programmes, with the Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering programme being the first one to be offered in August this year.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohammad Kadim Saudi said this will be followed by two new programmes next year, which is Bachelor in Technology Avionics and Bachelor of Aircraft Maintenance.
“Next year, there will be two new programmes; however, this year we will start off with Bachelor in Aerospace Engineering first.
“Subsequently, several other programmes will be developed as well, but what is more importantly is the research that we are going to do which will help the aerospace industry,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after attending the closing ceremony of Sarawak Aerospace Transformation Forum 2025 at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre Kuching here today.
Kadim further said that among other ways i-CATS could assist in contributing towards developing the aerospace industries will be by developing a microsatellite alongside looking at their capability in launching rockets.
“The academic programmes will be open for other people outside of Sarawak.
“However, Sarawakians have a major advantage through the establishment of free education at a higher education level which will begin in 2026.
“This is an opportunity for Sarawakians to further their study without being burden by the cost of the programme that they want to enrol in.
“This programme will not only be beneficial for them but also help the state in producing more professionals in critical fields such as aerospace, technology and engineering,” he elaborated.
Last year, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the federal government had approved the setting up of the faculty which would commence its inaugural semester in September 2025.
According to him the establishment of the new faculty signified Sarawak’s preparation to produce the trained workforce required to venture into the aerospace industry, particularly in the production of aircrafts part and avionics equipment.
