KUCHING: Sarawak’s first Iban Police Commissioner, Datuk Mancha Ata, bid farewell to the force today after handing over duties to his successor, capping a career that saw him rise from the ranks of VAT69 to the state’s top cop.
His successor, Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah from Lawas, is the youngest ever to be appointed as Police Commissioner at the age of 47.
The handing-over of duties and staff of leadership ceremony was held at the Senior Officer’s Mess, Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) here, witnessed by Bukit Aman Special Branch Director, Datuk Ibrahim Darus.
In his speech, Ibrahim paid tribute to Mancha, who will officially retire on September 29, after serving 39 years and 15 days in the force.
He noted that more than half of Mancha’s life had been devoted to the police, describing his contributions as invaluable to the force and to Sarawak.

“On behalf of the entire PDRM, I would like to express our deepest appreciation to Datuk and Datin for the dedication, sacrifices and service you have given to this noble force,” he said.
Drawing an analogy, Ibrahim likened Mancha to a hornbill protecting its nest, saying that he had led Sarawak IPK with both firmness and compassion.
“His leadership was not only about giving orders, but also about listening, showing tolerance, safeguarding the welfare of his men, and leading with wisdom.
“Under Mancha’s stewardship, Sarawak IPK had remained united while strengthening public confidence in the police,” he said.
Speaking from personal experience, Ibrahim shared that he had served under Mancha’s leadership as Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner for one year, three months, and 11 days, a period he described as both meaningful and memorable.
“I speak from the heart when I say this – I feel proud to stand here today and express my gratitude to my superior,” he said.
Meanwhile, in his farewell speech, Mancha expressed his deepest gratitude to the force and reflected on his journey ahead of his retirement.

“On September 29, I will be leaving this noble force that I have cherished throughout my life. I will step away with full confidence that the organisation will continue to be in good hands.
“I believe my successor (Zainal) would continue leading the Sarawak police with fresh energy and align its direction with the main focus of the Inspector-General of Police.
“With his educational background, experience and leadership, I am confident that he will steer the Sarawak contingent towards greater success,” he said.
Mancha also extended his appreciation to his deputies, senior officers and the entire Sarawak police contingent for their cooperation and support during his tenure.
“Together we have faced many challenges, from security issues and cross-border crime to strengthening ties with the community. Every step taken was in pursuit of the safety and success of our state and nation,” he said.
He said he was proud of the dedication and courage shown by officers and personnel in carrying out their duties, noting that their fighting spirit never wavered despite pressures and challenges.
“Even though I will soon return to civilian life, my journey with the force does not end here.
“This force will always remain close to my heart. I will continue to be a loyal supporter, praying for the safety and success of all officers, and I stand ready to assist in whatever capacity I can,” he said.
Calling on serving officers to continue their duties with integrity, professionalism and teamwork, Mancha reminded them to never let their fighting spirit fade, no matter the challenges ahead.
“This country needs us not only as enforcers of the law but also as guardians of the people’s trust,” he said.
Mancha began his career in Perak as part of the elite VAT69 special forces unit before rising through the ranks to become Deputy Commander and later Commander of the Sabah General Operations Force (GOF) Brigade.
In 2021, he was posted to his home state, Sarawak, as Commander of the state GOF Brigade before being promoted to Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner the same year.
He went on to serve as Sarawak Police Commissioner from November 2023 until September 26, 2025.
