SIBU: Despite the transformation of longhouse structures with the use of modern materials such as concrete and bricks, the Iban community has been urged to continue preserving the traditions and customs inherited from their ancestors.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau commended the residents for maintaining their cultural values even as their longhouse underwent physical modernisation.

“I am very pleased to see that despite the concrete construction of the longhouse, the traditions and customs are still being practised.

“This cultural heritage must be passed down to the younger generation to ensure the Iban identity is preserved,” he said during the Gawai Mangkong Tiang ceremony at Rumah Anne Saging, here yesterday (June 7).

Lau also expressed appreciation to the host for the warm reception and described the event as meaningful for the entire community.

“This is not merely a symbolic ritual, but a hopeful beginning for each family to receive blessings, peace, and prosperity,” he added.

He praised the spirit of cooperation shown by the longhouse community in the construction of their new home, noting that communal success hinges on unity and collaboration between local leaders and residents.

Touching on infrastructure concerns, heassured that efforts would be made to address issues raised by Tuai Rumah Anne, including the request for a tar-sealed road in front of the longhouse.

“I understand the need for proper road access. RTP funds are still available, but I will need some time to process the reallocation. I will do my best to help,” he said.

At the same time, he encouraged residents in the Sungai Pasai area to continue working together to support local development efforts.

“The cooperation between community leaders, village heads and councillors is vital to ensuring services reach the people effectively,” he said.
