KUCHING: The global environmental ergonomics community has converged in Sarawak as the International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics (ICEE) makes its debut in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

The 21st edition of the conference, ICEE 2026, has attracted about 425 participants from 84 organisations across 20 countries.

Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said 225 were international delegates, while another 200 were participants from Malaysia.

He said the gathering provided an opportunity for experts from different countries and disciplines to exchange ideas and build collaborations that could continue beyond the conference.

“The environmental challenges we face today are without borders.

“Likewise, the solutions we develop must be built upon international cooperation, scientific excellence and our shared commitment to a healthier, more resilient and sustainable future,” he said when officiating at the conference here today (Aug 17).

ICEE 2026 is hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) with the support of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) and the International Society for Environmental Ergonomics.

Dr Hazland said conferences such as ICEE provided an important platform for translating research into practical solutions that could strengthen community resilience.

He said the conference’s scientific programme, covering heat stress, thermal physiology, occupational health, climate resilience, ageing and human-environment interaction, could provide valuable knowledge for future policies and practices.

He added that such knowledge could help protect health and enhance human performance.
