KUCHING: Sarawak’s ambition to strengthen its digital economy has received a boost with the International Data Centre Authority (IDCA) offering its expertise to support the state’s development plans.

During a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Kompleks Satria Pertiwi, here today (Aug 20), IDCA outlined its role in providing policy advisory services on digital economy development to governments and corporations.

Head of ASEAN IDCA Md Shahriman M Sidek said robust infrastructure would be the backbone of Sarawak’s digital transformation.

“To ensure the digital economy grows, it requires strong infrastructure such as telecommunications towers, data centres and international connectivity through fibre optics and submarine cables.

“The Premier stressed that Sarawak should not only have digital hubs or data centres but also a complete international network,” he said this in a press conference after the courtesy call.

Md Shahriman added that Abang Johari demonstrated a clear understanding of the importance of digital infrastructure in advancing Sarawak’s long-term agenda.

“As such, we at IDCA are ready to assist in evaluating and strengthening development plans to make them truly future-proof, particularly in the area of data centres,” he said.

He noted that Sarawak’s exploration into developing data centre hubs also raises discussions on energy requirements and sustainability.

“These are important considerations in ensuring that the ecosystem is not only efficient but also resilient and environmentally sustainable,” he added.
