KUCHING: The IEM Sarawak Branch Engineer’s Run 2025 recorded its highest participation to date, drawing 1,750 runners — the largest turnout since the event began in 2015.
Held for the first time in Batu Kawa, the run carried the theme “Engineering Green Legacies” and was flagged off at the Petros Multifuel Station by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government.
The theme underscored Sarawak’s shift over the past decade from infrastructure development towards sustainability, alternative energy and long-term green innovation. The venue, featuring hydrogen refuelling, EV charging and traditional fuel facilities, was chosen to symbolise the state’s transition toward cleaner mobility and diversified energy sources.
In his speech, Dr Sim emphasised the vital role engineers play in supporting Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, noting their contribution to low-carbon development, renewable energy, digital and green innovation, and the creation of healthy, liveable communities.
He said Sarawakian engineers should continue leading green-technology adoption by innovating based on the state’s own strengths.
The run, now a flagship programme for IEM Sarawak, has grown into a community event involving engineers, industry players, academia, government agencies and the public. The institution said the programme promotes engineering awareness, supports STEM interest among youth and encourages healthier lifestyles.
The organisers thanked event sponsors and partners including KOBOPEM, WEIDA (M) Bhd, SEDC Energy, Pansar Engineering Services, Schneider Electric, Group Material Trading, Jurutera Minsar Consult, Ranhill Consulting, Nestlé Malaysia, City Jogger’s Club and Go Beyond Enterprise.
Top finishers were Shahmi Muhaimin (Men’s 5km), Lau Kah Wen (Women’s 5km), Syahrullah Safri (Men’s 10km) and Sally Yap (Women’s 10km).
IEM Sarawak will next host its Annual Dinner 2025 on Dec 19 at BCCK, to be officiated by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
