US President Donald Trump speaks to the press after signing a proclamation renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America aboard Air Force One, as it flies over the Gulf enroute to New Orleans, Louisiana on Febrary 09, 2025. For years, as disputes over names on the map riled up nationalist passions in several parts of the world, US policymakers have watched warily, trying to stay out or to quietly encourage peace. Suddenly, the United States has gone from a reluctant arbiter to a nomenclature belligerent, as President Donald Trump declared that the Gulf of Mexico will henceforth be called the "Gulf of America." In an executive order signed hours after he returned to the White House, Trump called the water body an "indelible part of America" critical to US oil production and fishing and "a favorite destination for American tourism and recreation activities." WASHINGTON: United States (US) President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the country, German news agency (dpa) reported on Sunday.

“Any steel coming to the US is going to have them. A 25 per cent tariff,” Trump told journalists travelling with him.

When asked whether aluminium imports would also be subject to tariffs, Trump responded, “25 per cent for both.” The president confirmed that further “reciprocal” tariffs would be announced in the coming week, with a formal declaration expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.

“Very simply, if they charge us, we charge them,” he told reporters, adding that the tariffs would take effect “almost immediately.”

US tariffs of 10 per cent on Chinese goods came into force on Tuesday, while planned 25 per cent tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada have been temporarily suspended for 30 days.

The suspension follows commitments from both countries to enhance border security measures.

Trump, who won the November presidential election after campaigning on a platform of reducing trade deficits, had previously imposed several tariffs during his first term from 2017 to 2021. – BERNAMA
