BAU: Several individuals were fined between RM1,000 and RM10,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here on Tuesday (Feb 24) for offences under the Open Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Bau police chief Dsp Mohd Haide A. Rahman said the offences involved Sections 4A(a), 4B(a), 6(1), 7(2) and 9(1) of the Act, with the court also ordering one to two months’ jail in default of payment.

“The majority of the accused have settled their fines, while several cases were recorded as warrant of arrest after the accused failed to appear in court.

“In separate cases involving more than one accused, the court imposed a fine of RM1,300 each, or one month’s jail in default,” he said.

Meanwhile, he added that for an offence under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, the court handed down a fine of RM500, with one month’s imprisonment in default. All fines for the Customs offence were paid.

“Under the Penal Code, one case under Section 323 was recorded as warrant of arrest.

“In another case under Section 376B, the court ordered the accused to be detained at Sekolah Henry Gurney Puncak Borneo for three years, effective Feb 24,” he said.

Mohd Haide said the cases were handled by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and were decided at the Magistrates’ Court in Bau on Tuesday.

He stressed that police remain committed to firm, fair and continuous enforcement to ensure public safety, order and well-being in the district.

The public is also advised to comply with the law and to channel any information related to criminal activities to the police for further action.
