ROBAN: An unemployed man’s attempt to earn extra cash by selling illegal public lottery numbers was cut short after he was arrested in anti-gambling operations on Wednesday (June 17).

The 39-year-old was detained by a team from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), led by Inspector Hendry, during ‘Ops Dadu’ at a parking area behind a row of shoplots in town here.

Police seized a slip of paper bearing illegal lottery numbers, a black Faber-Castell pen believed to have been used to record bets, and RM50 in cash suspected to be proceeds from the illegal gambling activity.

Saratok Police Chief, DSP Mathew Manggie, said during interrogations, the suspect admitted to working as an agent selling illegal public lottery numbers around Roban town.

“The suspect, who is not married and has no permanent employment, had turned to the illegal lottery business as a means of earning extra income

“He had allegedly been operating for about a week, targeting customers in and around Roban town,” he said.

His urine screening test returned negative for drugs.

Mathew said the case is being investigated under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
