KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak government has stressed that immediate action must be taken in the event of any security threat against the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, particularly in Bintulu.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said he has yet to receive further details regarding the reported threat.
“I am also not aware of the nature of the threat… like everyone else, I only read about it from news reports.
“But for Sarawak, we hope appropriate security measures will be taken to ensure our assets are protected if the threat is indeed real,” he told reporters after officiating at the
9th International Conference of Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum at DeTAR Putra, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak here today.
Yesterday (Sept 8), the National Security Council (MKN) issued an alert following information it received on potential security threats to LNG facilities nationwide, including those in Bintulu.
In a statement, MKN directed all LNG facilities operating in the Bintulu area to immediately tighten security measures temporarily to allow security forces and relevant authorities to conduct investigations into the matter.
When asked if the threat was disaster-related, Uggah, who is also chairman of the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), said he was still unsure what MKN meant.
“Disasters can happen at any time, so I am not certain what they were referring to in this context.
“That is why I need to seek clarification and obtain information from the relevant authorities first,” he stressed.
