Immigration nets 17 foreigners in midnight sweep

SARATOK: Seventeen foreigners, including three women, were arrested in a midnight raid at a plantation estate here on Saturday (May 10).

According to the Sarawak Immigration Department, all the detainees were found to have overstayed in Malaysia and were without valid identification documents.

The operation codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’ was carried out at 12.13am by Sri Aman Immigration Enforcement Unit at a shared quarters within the plantation estate.

“A total of 17 foreigners — 14 men and three women — were taken into custody for committing various immigration offenses.

“They were later taken to the immigration office for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63,” the department said.

In light of this, the department said such operation will continue to be conducted to ensure full compliance with immigration laws.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any information regarding the presence of undocumented migrants in their areas through online channels or directly to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
