SIBU: A total of 61 foreigners were detained during an early morning operation by the Sarawak Immigration Department around the town on Monday (Nov 10).

Codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’, the operation was launched following public tip-offs and targeted several foreign workers’ settlements.

Eighteen enforcement officers from the Special Action Team, along with personnel from Sibu, Sri Aman and Sarikei enforcement divisions, took part in the integrated operation.

Throughout the operation, a total of 62 individuals, including 12 women, were inspected. Of the figure, 61 were taken into custody for various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, including not possessing valid travel documents and overstaying.

The detainees were taken to the Immigration Office for further investigation and action.

The department reiterated its commitment to intensify enforcement efforts to curb immigration law violations while ensuring the safety and harmony of the local community.
