KUCHING: Sports associations in Sarawak that have been inactive have been urged to “buck up” and take bold steps to elevate sports development in the state.
Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah stressed that associations must think beyond small-scale events and work towards hosting national and regional-level competitions.

“To the inactive sports associations, please buck up. If you’re organising any sports events, don’t think small. Aim big and bring sports to this region,” he said in his address at the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) Appreciation Night at a hotel here, last night (Feb 22).
Abdul Karim assured that the state government would offer support in terms of funding and urged sports associations to submit their proposals.
“Whether it’s a national or regional event, Sarawak will support it, InshaAllah. Don’t worry about funding—I’ve already made that clear.
“Focus on your proposals. Liaise with the national associations and bring the sports to Sarawak. I’ve seen some sports that weren’t very active before, like boxing.
“But now, we’re seeing progress. The junior boxing team, for example, recently won in Nilai,” he said.
He also pointed out other successes, such as gymnastics, where a number of athletes have been absorbed into the national squad.
“At one time, Sarawak wasn’t very strong in some sports, but now we’re excelling. To the other sports associations, buck up, and ensure the sport under your care can excel. That’s the only way we can elevate sports to greater heights,” he added.
Abdul Karim assured the associations that SSC, his ministry, and the state government would always back sports associations in their efforts.
“We are here to back you up, and together, we will continue to develop sports to new heights,” he said.
