KUCHING: The inaugural Marudi Classic 2025 made its debut at Dataran Marudi, drawing 160 participants and visitors in a vibrant celebration of sports tourism.
Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring) Datuk Gerawat Gala officiated the event and expressed pride over the smooth organisation and overwhelming response, which included participants from Brunei, the United Kingdom, Sabah, Terengganu, and Johor.
“This event not only places Marudi on the global map but also highlights the beauty of the Puyut Lubuk Nibung longhouse and Marudi town, in line with the theme ‘Discover the Beautiful Nature of Baram.”
The Mulu assemblyman made these remarks on Sunday (April 27). Gerawat added that the event has strong potential to drive sports tourism while stimulating the local economy.
The Marudi Classic saw 70 cyclists competing across three main categories along a challenging 60km route.
Organised by the Masterpiece Cycling Club and the Marudi District Office, the event was supported by various government agencies and sponsored by Nestlé Malaysia.
Encouraged by the successful debut, organisers and stakeholders are optimistic that the Marudi Classic will grow into a major annual fixture, further enhancing Marudi’s reputation as a premier sports tourism destination in Sarawak.
