KUCHING: Sarawak stands as a land of peace, unity, understanding, respect and acceptance, fostered by its rich diversity and the state government’s commitment to inclusivity.

Bishop of the Diocese of Kuching, Datuk Danald Jute, affirmed that the rich diversity of heritage, culture, race, and religion in Sarawak reflects how communities can live together in harmony, respect, and unity.

Hence, he expressed gratitude to the state government for its inclusivity policy that unites people of different faiths and races, which serves as the foundation of Sarawak’s growth.

“More so when the world has been, and may continue to be, torn apart by conflicts, dissension, misunderstandings, prejudice, and even fear of the other, it is different here in Sarawak.

“This is a land where peace, unity, understanding, respect, and acceptance are very much part of our vocabulary.

“And one of the reasons for this is because of the government policy that we have here in Sarawak, which is inclusivity,” he said.

Towards this end he said the establishment of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), is a gallant and blessed effort by the Sarawak government.

He said this in his speech at the Anglican Interfaith Commission courtesy visit and dinner held at Sheraton Hotel on Monday (Oct 13).

Danald was recently appointed as Chairman of the Anglican Interfaith Commission, where he leads delegates in engaging with representatives from other religions to foster mutual understanding and learning.

He highlighted that interfaith dialogue, relations, understanding, cooperation, and collaboration are crucial within a multiracial and multi-religious society.

“I am not ashamed in any way to say and share that the condition of many of our houses of worship, including our mission schools, has been improving and will continue to improve, making worship and learning in schools most conducive.

“This is through the generosity of the Sarawak government, and we want to convey our deepest appreciation to our Premier for his generosity and kindness, not just in promoting this understanding, but in a real, practical, tangible way, by providing funds for all of this,” he said.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas congratulated Danald on his appointment as chairman and expressed confidence that he will bring the Anglican Interfaith Commission to greater heights.

He also extended a warm welcome to the delegates who came from afar to Sarawak and encouraged them to explore Kuching during their stay.

“We may not have all the answers, but we hope that what you see here in Sarawak offers hope, ideas, and inspiration. Let us continue to share experiences and strengthen the bond between faith and nation,” he said.
