THE Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill 2025, which increases the number of city and municipal council members from 30 to 33, is a proactive move to enhance governance, strengthen representation, and improve public service delivery
Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin said a lower ratio of council members to residents means more meaningful representation for all sectors of society.
“Council members serve as a bridge between the people and the local government. The addition of three council members will provide more communication channels for the public to voice concerns, access services, or seek assistance.

“This can directly improve the responsiveness to complaints related to local issues such as road repairs, drainage systems, grass cutting, sanitation, and public safety,” he said.
He said this when debating the Bill at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 20).
Yap said having more council members can strengthen the checks and balances within local government administration.
“More thorough oversight of budgets, projects, and management can help reduce the risk of mismanagement and corruption.
“In conclusion, the increase from 30 to 33 council members not only strengthens representation and the effectiveness of governance but also reinforces the foundation of local democracy.
“This is a proactive step towards a more transparent, accountable, and responsive local government that truly meets the people’s needs. I express my full support for the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill 2025,” he added.
