Index crime in Kuching falls by 16.67 pct

KUCHING: Index crime here recorded a significant decline from Jan 1 to Oct 31, highlighting the commendable performance of the district police investigation division (IPD).

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the total number of index crime cases fell by 145 cases or 16.67 per cent, from 870 cases during the same period in 2024 to 725 cases in 2025.

The daily average also dropped from 2.86 cases per day to 2.38 cases per day.

“This decrease reflects a positive trend and aligns with the National Key Result Area (NKRA) target of at least a 5 per cent reduction.

“It demonstrates the effectiveness of various focused initiatives and operations carried out throughout the year,” he said during the IPD Kuching monthly parade on Wednesday (Nov 12).

For violent crimes, Alexson said there was a slight increase of one case from 88 in 2024 to 89 in 2025, but the case clearance rate remained high at 74.16 per cent.

“Robbery without firearms decreased by 8 cases (-33.33 per cent), while robbery involving blunt or sharp weapons rose by 3 cases (+25 per cent) with a clearance rate of 66.67 per cent.

“Property crimes also showed a notable reduction of 146 cases (-18.67 per cent), from 782 cases in 2024 to 636 cases in 2025.

“Other thefts fell by 125 cases (-35.51 per cent), while motorcycle thefts decreased by 65 cases (-29.41 per cent),” he added.

Alexson also emphasised the public’s role in combating crime by reporting information via the JSJ hotline at 013-5253052.

He praised IPD Kuching officers, including 13 promoted personnel and 17 recipients of certificates of appreciation for outstanding service.

“This is proof of IPD Kuching’s capability in executing duties efficiently, systematically, and with integrity, while strengthening public confidence in the professionalism of the Royal Malaysia Police,” he said.

Alexson urged police personnel to continue serving with integrity and transparency for the safety of the nation.
