KUCHING: The Indian community of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Kuching has come together to offer assistance to flood victims here.
About 600 packets of food were distributed, with 300 each allocated to the evacuees at the Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) at Stapok Community Hall and R-Piang Kampung Sinar Budi Baru Hall.
Most of the evacuees were from Desa Wira and Batu Kawah area who were forced to relocate due to floods yesterday (Mar 2) that had hit their residential areas.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang who joined in the food distribution, commended ISKCON Kuching for their initiative.
“I’m very pleased and thankful for ISKCON members, who are good hearted people for the blessings and food that you have shared with the flood victims here,” he said at the Stapok Community Hall today (Mar 3).
He said it was difficult to see the flood victims especially children and elderly and thus hoped that the food contribution would bring some happiness to them.
“I would also like to encourage everybody who is in Kuching, if you are capable, do buy some dry food and bring it along to the PPS,” he said.
Meanwhile, ISKCON Kuching chairman Prabu Kripa said the free food distribution was part of their regular welfare activities, conducted either once or twice a month.
“We have prepared about 600 packets of vegetarian nasi lemak and normally we would visit various places such as charitable homes, markets, and villages to distribute the food.
“However, for today (Mar 3), Lo suggested that we distribute the food to the flood victims.
“Thus, this time we decided to distribute the food to those affected by the floods,” he said.
He said ISKCON Kuching is happy to be able to lend a helping hand to those in need.
“We also welcome the public to contribute in terms of goods like cooking items, this is so that we use them for our charity activities,” he said.
Also present was Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan, who was representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
