KUCHING: A 19-year-old Indonesian man was sentenced to three months in prison today for operating an online gambling device and overstaying in the country.
Riski Satriadi pleaded guilty to the two charges, which were heard before two separate courts.
For the first charge, he was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155), punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act, for overstaying in Malaysia.
Sessions Court Judge Iris Awen Jon sentenced him to three months in prison for the offence.
Iris also ordered Riski to be handed over to the Immigration Department for deportation after serving his sentence.
For the second charge, Riski was charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, punishable under Section 4B of the same Act, for operating a gambling device using a Vivo smartphone.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan sentenced him to three months in prison for the offence.
The court ordered both sentences to run concurrently from today.
Riski committed both offences at a grocery shop in Siburan at about 2:30 pm on July 30.
According to the facts of the case, a police officer led a team in a raid on the grocery shop after receiving information about suspected online gambling activities.
Police arrested Riski after finding him operating an online gambling device using a smartphone.
Checks subsequently found that he was an Indonesian national whose social visit pass had expired.
He was supposed to report at the Tebedu border checkpoint on June 18, 2025, but had remained in Malaysia beyond the permitted period.
Police also seized his smartphone during the raid.
Investigations found that Riski had overstayed in the country and was involved in operating online gambling activities.
Deputy Public Prosecutors, Chuah Kai Sheng and Mohammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, prosecuted while Riski was unrepresented.
