KUCHING: The construction of the Multipurpose Hall at the Institute for Rural Advancement (INFRA) Sarawak campus is 60 per cent complete, behind its target of 83 per cent, leading to calls for closer monitoring to keep the project on track.

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development, Datuk Rubiah Wang, who recently visited the site, said the RM5.68 million project remains a key infrastructure development under the ministry’s rural empowerment initiative.

Accompanied by officials and project stakeholders, her working visit included a comprehensive briefing on the project’s current status and the challenges faced on-site.

Commencing officially on December 20 2023, the project is scheduled for completion by August 19 2025.

It is currently being monitored by the Special Project Team 2 of the Public Works Department (JKR) Malaysia and executed by contractor Mindagang Resources Sdn Bhd.

Despite delays, the project boasts an extensive scope that includes a main hall structure, badminton court, male and female prayer rooms, changing rooms, lobby area, ablution facilities, disabled-friendly toilets, a stage, switch room, and an audiovisual (AV) room.

Rubiah stressed that the ministry is committed to ensuring rural infrastructure projects not only adhere to standards but also bring long-term benefits to the local community.

“We want every ringgit spent to directly benefit the people.

“This isn’t just about constructing a building; it’s about creating a conducive, inclusive space for community development in rural areas,” she said.
