KUALA LUMPUR: For thousands of graduates, a convocation scroll symbolises academic achievement but for some, it represents resilience, transformation and a triumph over extraordinary personal challenges.

One such story emerged as the highlight of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology’s (TAR UMT) final convocation ceremony of the year, held from Dec 20 to 23.

Rasidah Abdullah, once a stateless individual, celebrated earning a Bachelor of Finance and Investment (Hons), marking a powerful turning point in her life journey.

“My academic journey was challenging but I worked harder because I did not want to waste this opportunity or disappoint those who believed in me,” she said.

Rasidah faced significant obstacles when pursuing higher education due to her status but an offer from TAR UMT opened a pathway to reshape her future.

Her perseverance paid off when she graduated as a recipient of the prestigious President’s Award and the Public Bank Excellence Award in the Finance category.

Today, Rasidah is employed as a budget analyst in the financial technology sector, reflecting how education has enabled her to secure a stable and promising career.

Another inspiring graduate was Lo Yean Meow, who completed his Master of Counselling at the age of 70, exemplifying TAR UMT’s commitment to lifelong learning.

Motivated by the university’s inclusive philosophy, Lo pursued postgraduate studies to enhance his voluntary counselling work after retirement.

He shared that the academic journey was demanding but the supportive learning environment and encouragement from lecturers made the experience deeply meaningful.

The December convocation ceremony saw a total of 4,148 graduates receive their scrolls, including 97 postgraduates and 4,051 Bachelor’s degree recipients.

The ceremony was presided over by TAR UMT president Prof Dato’ Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, who personally presented the scrolls to the graduates.

Prof Lee reaffirmed the university’s founding pledge to provide access to education regardless of background, creed or race.

He encouraged graduates to apply their knowledge, skills and values to contribute positively towards society and help build a sustainable future.

For the year 2025, TAR UMT produced a total of 12,334 graduates across its campuses nationwide.
