BEKENU: A community-led integrity drive has brought together government agencies, students and residents in a coordinated effort to strengthen transparency and accountability at the grassroots level.

Around 200 people took part in the Gerakan Komuniti Berintegriti ‘Keep Malaysia Clean’ programme held at Kampung Kuala Sibuti on Saturday (April 18), underscoring the role of integrity in sustaining community wellbeing and long-term development.

Officiating at the event, Deputy Minister for Women and Early Childhood and Community Development and Bekenu assemblywoman, Datuk Rosey Yunus, said integrity remained central to ensuring development delivers tangible benefits.

“Without honesty and accountability, development becomes fragile and unsustainable,” she said.

She added that the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) depends on strong governance and transparent use of resources to avoid leakages.

Rosey stressed that building a culture of integrity requires a whole-of-community approach, with active participation at the grassroots rather than reliance on government alone.

She also commended students from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Sarawak Campus for working closely with residents, describing their involvement as reflective of the “Segulai Sejalai” spirit of collective progress.

The programme, part of wider efforts to align community engagement with state development priorities, featured activities ranging from village clean-ups and anti-corruption murals to cooking competitions aimed at strengthening ties between students and locals.

Participants also attended integrity and anti-drug briefings, alongside a fire drill conducted by the Fire and Rescue Department to improve community preparedness.

The initiative was jointly organised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), IPG Sarawak Campus and the Anti-Corruption Student Movement, with support from enforcement agencies, local authorities and community leaders.

Organisers said similar programmes are expected to be expanded to other districts to further embed integrity-driven practices at community level.
