MIAMI: Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has announced his retirement after a professional career spanning almost two decades, reported Xinhua.

The 36-year-old former Barcelona and Spain left-back is under contract with Inter Miami until December 2027, but said he will step away at the end of the current MLS season.

“The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba said in a video on Instagram.

“I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I do so with complete conviction, peace, and happiness.”

Alba, who was released by Barcelona as a teenager, rejoined the Catalan club in 2012 after a successful spell at Valencia.

He was part of the Barcelona side that won six La Liga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League.

He was capped 93 times for Spain, winning the 2012 European Championship.

“Jordi has been an exceptional addition to Inter Miami and one of the standout players in Major League

Soccer over the past two seasons,” Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said.

“His experience, consistency and attacking contribution have been very important to the club’s success. Beyond the goals and assists, he has been a great asset within the team and an exemplary professional.”

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi, who played with Alba at Barcelona, was among those to pay tribute to the Spaniard on social media.

“Thanks to you, Jordi. I’m going to miss you so much,” the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said. “Who’s going to give me the assists now?”

Neymar, who also shared the Blaugrana (nickname for FC Barcelona) dressing room with Alba, was another to express his best wishes.

“It was an honour to be a part of your career,” the Brazilian forward wrote. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
