LIMBANG: Young people should take an interest in their customs, cultures, and traditions, said Deputy Minister of Transport and Limbang MP Datuk Hasbi Habibollah.
He said that if young people remain indifferent, these customs, cultures, and traditions could easily disappear.
“This is especially true in today’s modern world, where the younger generation is more preoccupied with their gadgets.
“I urge the Kedayan Association or any relevant parties to continuously nurture an interest in young people from an early age, particularly in learning about the customs, culture, arts, and traditions of the Kedayan people.
“A community’s identity is usually reflected through its culture, customs, clothing, food, and so on,” he said.
He said this during the Cultural Night in conjunction with the 2024 Kedayan Limbang Harvest Festival, held at Kampung Tegarai, Limbang, on Saturday.
In addition, Hasbi also announced an allocation of RM35,000 for the Kedayan Association of Limbang to organise the 2024 Kedayan Limbang Harvest Festival.
During the festival, the Alai Bangis and Alai Kapoo competitions were held especially for children to showcase traditional Kedayan attire, while the Kelupis Wrapping, Kelupis Weaving, Kepala Bangis, and Kepala Kapoo competitions were aimed at the youth.
He then said that early exposure like this is very beneficial and indirectly nurtures an interest in young Kedayan people to learn about the traditions, culture, clothing, food, and customs of the Kedayan community.
“The association’s efforts to involve young people should be continued to ensure there are successors in the future,” he added.
