KUCHING: The Sarawak Open International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025 concluded triumphantly after two days of spectacular performances that captivated audiences and celebrated Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage.

Held at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multi-Purpose Hall here on Nov 1 and 2, the international event drew top teams from China, Indonesia, Singapore, and across Malaysia, transforming Kuching into a vibrant hub of Asian cultural excellence.

The championship featured four competition categories – Northern Lion Dance, High Pole Southern Lion Dance, Luminous Dragon Dance, and Traditional Southern Lion Dance, each highlighting exceptional artistry, balance, rhythm, and teamwork.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan commended the organisers and participants for elevating the event’s profile.

“This event not only preserves our cultural heritage but also promotes it on the international stage,” he said.

“The ministry will continue to support this competition as it plays a vital role in both cultural preservation and sports tourism.”

Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, expressed satisfaction with the successful turnout, noting that the venue—part of a future ecopark development in Batu Kawa—attracted enthusiastic spectators over both days.

“This international cultural sporting event will draw more visitors to Sarawak, and I look forward to future editions here,” he said.

Organising chairman and CMAA president Chester Lim said the championship had set a new benchmark for cultural excellence and global camaraderie.

“We are thrilled by the turnout and world-class performances. This year’s event showcased Sarawak’s creativity and spirit, particularly with the CMAA Northern Lion Dance Team’s fusion of Ngajat and Sape music.”

Persatuan Tarian Naga dan Singa Qun Yi Kota Tinggi Johor emerged as champions in the final Traditional Southern Lion Dance category, with prizes presented by Snowdan and Tan Kai.
