MIRI: The 2025 Borneo International Robotics Tournament will showcase the brilliance of young minds as it opens its doors at the Grand Ballroom of Meritz Hotel Miri from May 7 to 10.
Organised by SMK Chung Hua (CF) Miri and the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development along with Sasbadi Learning Solutions, the event has attracted an impressive 220 teams from Malaysia and beyond.
Participants will compete in various categories, including the Robomission Battle (spanning elementary to upper levels for ages 9 to 18), alongside the ReboSports Double Tennis category and an Open Category for those aged 19 and above.
Of the teams participating, 167 are from Malaysia, while 53 teams represent international contingents from countries including China, Chinese Taipei, Macau, Vietnam, and Thailand.
This diverse array of participants is expected to elevate the tournament’s stature, promoting healthy competition on a global scale.
Miri District Education Officer Mariam Monek praised SMK Chung Hua (CF) Miri for its significant role in hosting such a high-profile event.
She said the ministry is committed to fostering Science and Technology education, aimed at enhancing students’ higher-order thinking skills, IT literacy, and capabilities in robotic innovation.
“This competition is not only a platform for knowledge exchange but also a vital opportunity for students to understand the development of robotics across various nations.
“It fosters international cooperation and broadens their global perspectives,” she said.
Additionally, 314 Malaysian students will receive co-curricular activity points (PAJSK) as a reward for their participation.
Lai Jia Ling, Principal of SMK Chung Hua (CF) Miri, expressed unwavering confidence in the school’s ability to successfully host the tournament.
Lai highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing student potential, creativity, and leadership skills.
“As the school with the highest number of science-stream classes in Miri, we are dedicated to encouraging our students to develop innovative ideas and solutions,” she noted.
Lai also pointed out the vital role of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in our daily lives, whether through smart vacuum cleaners, home security systems, or intelligent educational robots that enhance personalised learning experiences.
“By engaging in this competition, our students will gain valuable insights into global technological advancements, equipping them for a future increasingly driven by AI and robotics innovation,” she added.
As anticipation builds for this landmark event, the 2025 Borneo International Robotics Tournament promises to be a celebration of talent, creativity, and international collaboration, marking Miri as a burgeoning centre for technological excellence.
