KUCHING: The Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) Kuching, which currently hosts 318 students across Years 7, 8 and 9, officially marked its launch at the 12th Mile campus.

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, described the launch as more than the opening of a school building.

“While our doors first opened for classes on 11 March 2024, today is about celebrating the heart and soul that has gone into creating this sanctuary for learning,” he said in his welcoming speech during the school’s launch, officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (Jan 31).

He highlighted the school’s mission to nurture well-rounded, disciplined and happy students who will grow into compassionate leaders.

“At its core, this school was born from a simple truth championed by our Premier: every child, regardless of their family background, deserves a fair shot at success.

“Education is the most powerful tool for a family to change its story and achieve upward mobility,” he said.

Sagah emphasised the school’s commitment to providing a global standard of education.

“We use English as the medium of instruction, follow the Cambridge curriculum, and focus on essential 21st-century skills such as problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking,” he added.

“We aim to empower students from low-income groups to become the future leaders our state needs.”

He said YSISS Kuching is equipped with 20 Smartboard classrooms, six science laboratories, and Free Laptop Assistance for B40 students to support interactive and multimedia learning.

The school’s academic and extracurricular achievements were also highlighted.

Sagah said Year 7 students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in English as a Second Language, Global Perspectives, and Geography in the Cambridge Year-End Progressive Tests while Year 8 students maintained a 100 per cent pass rate in ESL and Art and Design, with 95 per cent in Science.

Beyond academics, he said YSISS students have excelled in competitions both nationally and internationally.

Achievements include the Best Presenter award at the 8th Technology and Innovation International Conference 2025, finalist placements at the RERO Micro Coding Competition, medals at the Young Innovators Challenge 2025, and sporting successes in chess, athletics and long jump.

Sagah expressed gratitude to Yayasan Sarawak and YSIE Sdn Bhd for their pivotal roles in planning and operational support.

“Your commitment ensures our students have access to a curriculum that sets a global standard, preparing them to succeed anywhere in the world,” he said.

He also thanked parents, staff and students, urging the latter to seize the opportunity to develop their potential.

“Your achievements today are just the beginning. Enjoy your time here at school, be the best you can be, and make us proud,” he said.
