SIBU: The Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS) here is now ready to be opened next month, pending final approval from the Ministry of Education.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, said the school building has been completed and all necessary approvals including from the local council and Fire and Rescue Department have already been obtained.

“The only approval left is from the Education Department to permit the school’s operation. I believe this will not be a problem as we have maintained a good relationship with them,” he said during the official handing over of the keys for the new campus on Saturday.

Sagah (centre) speaking to the media.

Sagah explained that although the new premises are only now completed, classes for the Sibu campus had already commenced earlier this year, temporarily hosted at YSISS Kuching at 12th Mile, Kuching-Serian Road.

“With the building ready and fully equipped, the students are expected to move into the new campus by September this year. The teachers, principal, and all required staff have already been recruited, and classes are ongoing,” he added.

“We hope by the first quarter of next year, everything would be in order so we can get ready for the intake of students from the central region by 2026,” he said.

On the school’s capacity, Sagah said it would be able to accommodate 500 students at any one time.

Sibu campus is the third international school under Yayasan Sarawak, apart from the 12th Mile, Kuching- Serian and YSISS in Petra Jaya campuses.

Sagah expressed optimism that the school would attract more students in the future, allowing more young Sarawakians to benefit from high-quality international education closer to home.

Students will be provided with hostels and other facilities borne fully by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak.

The school emphasises the use of English without neglecting the importance of Bahasa Malaysia and hope to produce more Science students to create more people for the technology and digital sector, in line with the Sarawak’s government policy of moving towards the use of new energy, particularly green energy.
