This week, the Premier launched the Special Finance Assistance (BKK) for Sarawak students, a landmark programme worth RM50.5 million.

For thousands of families across Sarawak, this is more than just an announcement. It is real, tangible help reaching students who need it most.

Every Sarawakian student enrolled in higher learning institutions will receive RM1,200 a year, paid monthly through the secure and user-friendly SPay Global platform. This is regardless of family background or financial status.

This initiative is the first of its kind in Malaysia. Sarawak is the pioneer in providing direct pocket money assistance to all students.

The message is clear: every Sarawakian youth matters. Financial circumstances will not stand in the way of a student’s potential.

The timing of the BKK could not be more critical. The rising cost of living continues to strain many families, especially those with children studying away from home.

Many students have faced the difficult choice of balancing part-time jobs with their studies or cutting back on essentials to cope.

This financial assistance now gives families much-needed breathing room. It grants students the freedom to focus fully on their education without constant worry over daily expenses.

In addition to monetary support, disbursing the BKK through SPay Global is a step towards digital transformation. Students can access their allowances safely and conveniently.

They are encouraged to adopt cashless payment habits and develop crucial digital literacy skills that will benefit them in the modern economy. This fits perfectly with Sarawak’s agenda to build a robust digital economy that includes all citizens.

The BKK is part of a larger ecosystem of education support designed to benefit students and families holistically.

The Book Voucher Programme provides RM500 to students from low-income families. This eases the burden of buying textbooks and study materials.

The Free Laptop Scheme offers RM3,000 in digital support to B40 students. This ensures technology does not become a barrier to learning.

To help students maintain close ties with their families, the iGPS (Graduan Pulang Sarawak) programme provides RM300 flight subsidies twice a year. This allows students to travel home during festive seasons or semester breaks without financial stress.

Additionally, the PTPTN Loan Repayment Discount offers a 30 per cent reduction on outstanding education loans for eligible Sarawakian borrowers. This further relieves graduates of financial pressures as they start their careers.

Together, these comprehensive measures lighten the load for parents and equip students with the tools and support they need to succeed.

No other state in Malaysia offers such a complete and thoughtful network of student assistance. Sarawak is setting the national benchmark for student-focused support that goes beyond financial aid to include digital access, mobility, and debt relief.

At the heart of these initiatives is Sarawak’s unwavering belief that education is the foundation of progress.

Education transforms dreams into real opportunities and opportunities into meaningful growth for the economy, society, and every family in the state.

History has shown us this truth. Many of the leaders, professionals, and civil servants who shaped modern Sarawak came from humble beginnings.

They were able to rise because someone believed in them and gave them the chance to study.

Today, we are continuing that legacy by ensuring the same chance is passed to a new generation so they too can rise and contribute back to their communities and the state.

Looking ahead, Sarawak is preparing for another historic milestone. The Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) will make Sarawak the first state in Malaysia to offer free higher education for all eligible students.

This groundbreaking initiative guarantees that a student’s background or family income will never determine how far they can go.

Whether from a rural longhouse, fishing village, or town, every hardworking Sarawakian student will have the opportunity to pursue tertiary education without financial barriers.

Our five higher education institutions—Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), i-CATS University College, and CENTEXS—will continue to nurture the engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and innovators who will power Sarawak’s future.

These institutions play a vital role in delivering the skilled workforce needed to drive Sarawak’s economy forward, as outlined in the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

This is what a people-centric approach to development looks like in practice.

It is not just about building roads and bridges. It is about unlocking human potential, lifting families from financial hardship, and investing in the future of our people.

The launch of the BKK is far more than a simple aid programme. It is a helping hand extended to parents, a lifeline to students, and a promise from the state that Sarawak will always invest in its people.

With BKK, FTES, and the ongoing support from Yayasan Sarawak, no Sarawakian will be left behind. Every young person will have the opportunity to study, to succeed, and to play an active role in shaping a prosperous future for the state.

Sarawak is not just developing infrastructure.

We are investing in our people.

Through education and support for our youth, we are laying a strong foundation for a Sarawak that is capable, resilient, and ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the future.
