KUCHING: A businessman in his late fifties from Kuching fell prey to an investment scam, resulting in a staggering loss of RM270,000.
The fraud lured victims with the promise of a 20 percent return on each investment made.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the Sarawak Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) was alerted to the incident yesterday (Nov 17).
“While at home on October 25, the victim was browsing Facebook and found an investment advertisement.
“Afterward, the victim initiated contact with a suspect named Dick and Jenny via a phone call to enrol in the investment.
“The victim was subsequently included in a WhatsApp group called ‘Whale Program (Dolphins),’ overseen by a suspect named Kevin as the chairman, with Dick assuming the role of mentor providing insights into this investment,” it stated.
In the course of investment transactions, the victim received an APK file and proceeded to register the EXGCOO application.
Engaging in ten consecutive money transfer transactions from late October to mid-November, the victim directed funds to three distinct bank accounts, totaling approximately RM 270,000.
The victim became aware of the deception when the suspects demanded further payments, despite not having received any profits from the initial investment.
