KUCHING: A major step towards advancing Sarawak’s green energy future was taken today as InvestSarawak and China Energy Engineering Investment Corporation Ltd (CEEIC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the development of large-scale renewable energy generation and infrastructure projects in the state.
The signing ceremony, held at the Sheraton Kuching, was witnessed by Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, with the MoU signed by He Lei, Chief Economist and General Manager of the Overseas Department of CEEIC, and Timothy Ong Wye Ern, Chief Executive Officer of InvestSarawak.
The partnership will see CEEIC develop two gigawatts (2GW) of renewable energy, battery storage, and supporting grid infrastructure to meet Sarawak’s growing energy needs.
It is n line with the state’s development goals, especially the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims for low-carbon manufacturing and a hydrogen economy.
CEEIC, part of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), is a global leader in energy infrastructure, specialising in solar, wind, hydro, biomass and energy storage, with over 12 gigawatts (GW) of capacity developed across multiple sectors and countries, reducing over three million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
With an estimated worth of USD1.35 billion (RM6 billion), the partnership underscores Sarawak’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in renewable energy, ensuring long-term energy security, and advancing its green agenda.
The initiative, expected to create jobs, accelerate technology transfer, and bolster Sarawak’s long-term energy security, represents a crucial step towards achieving the state’s sustainable development goals and advancing a low-carbon future for both the region and ASEAN.
“We are committed to strengthening Sarawak’s role as a regional hub for green energy and advancing our transition to a low-carbon economy under PCDS 2030,” Awang Tengah said in emphasising Sarawak’s commitment to strengthening its position as a regional hub for green energy.
“CEEIC is honoured to partner with InvestSarawak and the Sarawak government in this renewable energy project, bringing decades of global experience and a commitment to developing large-scale solar and hybrid energy systems in line with Sarawak’s power development plans, with investment phases subject to China’s approvals,” said Wang Honggang, CCEIC Deputy General Manager.
