KUCHING: The passing of Christopher Ling Jia Siang, a student of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) Perlis Campus, has been described as a significant loss to the education sector, particularly among aspiring educators.

Sarawak Education Director Omar Mahli said that during his lifetime, the late Christopher was known as a dedicated student who was committed to his studies and actively involved in various campus activities.

“His friendly and approachable nature made him well-liked among his peers and lecturers,” he said in a statement after receiving the remains at Kuching International Airport today.

The remains, which arrived at 4.30 pm, were received in a sombre atmosphere by close family members as well as representatives from educational institutions.

Friends of the deceased were also present to pay their final respects as a tribute to someone remembered as dedicated and of good character.

The remains are expected to be taken to Chan Funeral Parlor Kuching for funeral arrangements.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MoE) is reviewing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for outdoor activities across all its institutions to strengthen safety measures.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry takes full responsibility for the tragedy.

“Justice must be served for the families. A transparent, thorough and comprehensive investigation is underway. Any breaches of regulations will be addressed, and no one will be shielded from accountability,” she said in a statement.
