KUALA LUMPUR: Iran’s acceptance of the two-week ceasefire with the United States (US) is based on conditions set by Tehran, the cultural counsellor at the Iranian Embassy in Malaysia, Dr Habibreza Arzani, said.
He said Tehran had rejected an earlier 15-point proposal by the US, and instead put forward its own 10-point proposal as the basis for any ceasefire negotiations.
“With the conditions, we are going to go through this with these conditions, we are going to discuss but the base will be these 10 conditions.
“It was the reason that we accepted the ceasefire,” he told reporters after the forum ‘American-Israeli War on Iran: Return of Colonialism and The Future of Civilisations’ here on Wednesday.
When asked about concerns over US President Donald Trump’s tendencies to reverse decisions, Arzani stressed that Iran does not intend to prolong the war but remains prepared to respond if attacked.
Arzani also expressed gratitude to Malaysia for its support of Iran, adding that the first message received after the conflict came from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“I am going to thank from the depth of my heart, for the Malaysian nation, the government and nation of Malaysia, for their very great support for Iran, as an oppressed nation in this area and in this matter. I am going to thank Malaysia for their support for Iran and Palestine from the beginning,” he added.
US President Donald Trump announced, on Tuesday, a two-week suspension of military action against Iran.
“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” he posted on the Truth Social platform.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, in a statement on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council, said that Iran’s Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations if attacks against the country are halted.
“For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations,” Araghchi posted on X. – BERNAMA
