BINTULU: The Islamic astronomy (ilmu falak) is not only important in the academic and religious fields but also contributes to the development of competency, innovation, and unity of the ummah in facing contemporary challenges.

Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) President, Datuk Misnu Taha, said the glorious history of Samarkand with the Ulugh Begh Observatory has proven that astronomy can connect the mastery of astronomy, mathematics and religion, resulting in a distinguished Islamic civilisation.

He added that Ulugh Begh’s legacy not only formed the foundation of modern astronomy but also inspired Muslims to continue advancing in knowledge and technology.

“Drawing inspiration from this legacy, today’s seminar aims to drive the development of astronomy in Malaysia, particularly in Bintulu Division and Sarawak, so it can contribute holistically to the progress of the ummah.

“It is a meeting point between knowledge and heritage, linking a glorious past with a hopeful future,” he said.

He said this when officiating ‘Seminar Falak: Inspirasi Warisan Samarkand Memacu Ummah Maju’ at a leading hotel here today.

The seminar also featured several paper presentations on astronomy, including ‘The History of Ulugh Begh’, ‘Ulugh Begh’s Influence on Astronomy Applications in the Malay World’, ‘A Competency Development Model for Astronomy Based on Ulugh Begh’s Legacy’, and ‘Ulugh Begh’s Madrasah’, which served as a centre of excellence for astronomy in its time.

Misnu explained that these presentations not only gave society the opportunity to learn about this great astronomical figure but also inspired continuous and practical strengthening of the field.

“Mastery of astronomy is very important as it not only helps determine the Islamic calendar and astronomical phenomena but also adds value to educational and research development in Sarawak,” he said.

He expressed hope that such seminars would become a catalyst for the growth of astronomy in Bintulu Division specifically, and throughout Sarawak in general.
