KUCHING: The Italian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sarawak’s decarbonisation efforts, strengthening ties in sustainable development.

Italy’s Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Massimo Rustico said that Sarawak is an important state with immense potential under the visionary leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He lauded the collaboration between Acacia Power Sdn Bhd and NextChem SpA, stressing the need for advanced technologies to be introduced to Sarawak.

“We try to understand which is the best point of entry into the programme, the projects, the vision that the Premier is setting up and which make today’s Sarawak a state that everybody’s looking at with more and more interest.

“As the ambassador of Italy, I’m very proud that we have been able to work on a concept and we have been able to put all the dots together to have the signature of the MoU.

“We want to be part of a success story. We want to contribute to the success story of Sarawak.”

Rustico said this during the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between Acacia Power Sdn Bhd and Nextchem SpA at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC), today (Dec 2).

The MoU was signed by the Acacia Power Sdn Bhd director Datuk Amar Tan Sri Dr Abdul Aziz Husain and Nextchem SpA corporate and business strategy senior vice-president Giovanni Sale, witnessed by Abang Johari.

Rustico added that the collaboration extends beyond green energy production, placing a strong focus on reducing carbon emissions across all stages of final product manufacturing.

“We discussed that it is not enough to produce green energy; the methods used to produce the final products must also carefully consider carbon offsetting as much as possible.”

As such, he assured that the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, through its export credit agency, SACE, is ready to provide financial support for the implementation of carbon reduction projects in the state.

He further noted that his counterpart also intends to meet with the Sarawak Financial Secretary to discuss this financial support.
