MILAN, Italy: Valentine’s Day has also arrived at the Winter Olympics, but for the athletes, romantic activities depend on whether they are still competing, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
American figure skating couple, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, who have won silver in ice dance, will have the opportunity to enjoy it today.
“Maddie would like chocolate and flowers, which I need to purchase. We are usually busy competing, but now we’re done, so we’ll have some time,” Bates told the Olympic news service.
Norwegian mixed team curlers, Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Negregotten, who are married, have also finished their event.
Skaslien said, “We definitely need some romance now” and added, “Maybe we should try to find some nice things to do.”
“We’ve been staying in separate rooms while competing. It’s just a lot of training and focusing on the games, so there’s not much time for doing other things as husband and wife,” she said.
“Doing it with the one you love the most, that’s special,” she added about competing together.
Things look a bit different for Norwegian speed skaters, Aurora Grinden Lovas and Sander Eitrem, as they are still competing.
“Maybe we should go out for a coffee or something,” the 5,000m gold medallist Eitrem said.
“It’s a day between the 10k and team pursuit. We’ll have a rest day, so we need to do something, I guess.”
Swiss curler Yannick Schwaller, who competed in the mixed event alongside his wife, Briar Schwaller-Hürlimann, said he isn’t concerned with the Valentine’s Day fuss.
“We don’t do Valentine’s Day. I’m romantic 365 days a year,” Schwaller said. – BERNAMA-dpa
