BANGKOK: Sarawak’s Jackie Wong feels he can improve with more consistent and structured training, despite claiming bronze in the men’s hammer throw with a 59.81m effort at the SEA Games.

Jackie acknowledged that while he was pleased to stand on the podium, he believes there is still room to push further.

“I still have targets to go beyond 63 metres or 64 metres. However, there were some challenges with maintaining a consistent training schedule, which impacted my performance,” he added.

As an assistant coach to Grace Wong Xiu Mei, the 33-year old Jackie noted that Grace has been consistent with her training.

“She started slow. Then she followed me for training in China in August because, during that time, she had slowed down on training.

“Coach Gu Yuan asked me to bring her for training, gym sessions, and practice because the coach has work commitments in China,” he explained.

He pointed out that Gu Yuan trains a large squad in China, balancing the needs of over 20 athletes.

Meanwhile, Grace made headlines by breaking the national hammer throw record three times at the same SEA Games, clinching her fourth consecutive gold with an impressive best of 65.41m.

The Sarikei-born athlete is hopeful for future competitions and is committed to improving his consistency and technique.

His determination reflects the growing potential of Sarawak’s athletes on the international stage.
