KUCHING: Starting April 21, all students in public schools will be required to wear the Jalur Gemilang badge on their uniforms.

This new policy, introduced by the Ministry of Education, aims to foster a stronger sense of patriotism and national identity among students. By making the badge a part of the school uniform, authorities hope to reinforce the values of unity, pride, and appreciation for Malaysia’s history and achievements.

However, the policy has sparked mixed reactions — while some see it as a meaningful way to strengthen national spirit, others question whether patriotism should be enforced through regulations rather than cultivated naturally.

Sarawak Tribune had the opportunity to speak to some students to get their perspectives on the matter.

Wearing the Jalur Gemilang badge serves as a daily reminder of my national identity and unity as a Malaysian. However, true patriotism is reflected in our actions — contributing to society and appreciating our culture — rather than merely wearing a symbol.

The rule is a good way to promote national pride and remind students of their identity. However, patriotism should come from the heart, not just a rule. What truly matters is whether students genuinely connect with the meaning behind the badge. While wearing the same badge may foster a sense of unity, real unity stems from respect, teamwork, and understanding one another. If the policy includes activities that bring students together, it could have a more meaningful impact.

I think this is a smart way to instil patriotism among students while fostering a love for the country. To me, the Jalur Gemilang symbolises the harmony and diversity of our people, as well as the struggles and achievements that have shaped our nation. I believe this policy will help strengthen unity among students by encouraging them to appreciate and love their country. It may also help some students recognise the significance of the Jalur Gemilang in our nation.

The policy has good intentions, but true national pride comes from understanding and appreciation, not compulsion. Simply wearing the badge won’t make students more patriotic; it must be complemented by education and meaningful engagement.
