KUCHING: Former Malaysian International and 2002 Malaysia Open champion, James Chua, has returned home to take charge of Sarawak badminton after officially assuming the role of Sarawak Badminton Association (SBA) head coach on June 1.
The appointment marks another step in SBA’s efforts to strengthen its technical and high-performance structure under the SMASH 2030 strategic roadmap.
The former national men’s singles player represented Malaysia at the 1998 and 2002 Asian Games, helping the country secure team bronze medals on both occasions before embarking on a coaching career.
Chua previously served with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) before becoming head coach of the Czech Republic national team, where he oversaw the country’s high-performance programme and guided players on the European circuit.
As head coach, Chua will oversee athlete development, talent identification, coach education and high-performance programmes in Sarawak.
He will also work closely with the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) in preparing athletes for major competitions, including SUKMA and national championships.
SBA president Datuk Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar described the appointment as a significant step forward for Sarawak badminton.
“James Chua’s appointment reflects SBA’s commitment to strengthening our technical and high-performance structure.
“We are confident his leadership will help develop more quality players, strengthen our coaching system and create a sustainable pathway for future success,” he said.
Meanwhile, SBA honorary secretary Datuk Dr Wan Khalik Wan Muhammad said the appointment represented a strategic investment in the future of Sarawak badminton.
“James brings international experience, technical expertise and a winning mindset that will accelerate our efforts to position Sarawak among the leading badminton states in Malaysia,” he said.
Wan Khalik also thanked the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED), Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) for supporting the coaching engagement.
“Their continued commitment to sports development is instrumental in helping us realise the aspirations of SMASH 2030,” he said.
For Chua, the appointment presents an opportunity to give back to the state where his badminton journey began.
“It is an honour to return and serve Sarawak badminton. I look forward to working with SBA, MSNS, SSC, coaches, players, parents and stakeholders to build a stronger future for the sport.
“Together, we will strive to develop the next generation of Sarawak badminton talents and achieve the goals outlined under SMASH 2030,” he said.
