KUCHING: The Emperor of Japan has acknowledged Sarawak and its development efforts, a gesture Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says reflects the state’s growing international recognition.
The Premier had recently travelled to Japan to receive The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, one of the country’s highest honours, in recognition of his contributions to strengthening Malaysia-Japan relations.
“In Japanese culture, people cannot speak directly to their emperor. You cannot talk to them freely, and even the way you sit must show respect,” Abang Johari said during the 37th Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) triennial general assembly welcoming dinner at Imperial Hotel last night (Nov 14).
As such, he recounted that Emperor Naruhito stepped down from the dais to meet him, surprising even the palace officials.
“Perhaps my attire was different from the others, but he said to me, ‘I know Malaysia, and I know a bit about your state.’ I was shocked — it turns out the Emperor of Japan knows about Sarawak.
“To me, that is an acknowledgement of the work we have done, from forest rehabilitation to renewable energy, and a recognition that Sarawak is at the forefront of new energy in the world,” he added.
Abang Johari said the recognition reflects Sarawak’s leadership in hydrogen energy, produced from the state’s abundant water resources, and its broader commitment to sustainable development.
He also reflected on the evolution of hydrogen, noting that while it was used destructively during World War II, it now serves as a safe and renewable energy source.
“Meeting the Emperor and receiving this honour underscores Sarawak’s potential to play a leading role in clean energy and environmental sustainability,” he said.
The Premier also noted that Sarawak’s efforts in renewable energy, forest rehabilitation, and other development initiatives are a reflection of the state’s ability to adapt to global challenges and contribute meaningfully to international sustainability goals.
“Recognition at this level shows that the world is watching our progress. It motivates us to continue innovating and building a sustainable future for all Sarawakians,” he said.
