KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has been conferred ‘The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star’ by the Japanese Government.
The Embassy of Japan said Abang Johari was among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations announced by the government of Japan, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting regional exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Malaysia.
According to the embassy, Abang Johari has been instrumental in strengthening economic and energy cooperation between Japan and Sarawak, particularly in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and ammonia.
“Under his leadership, Sarawak has forged close partnerships with leading Japanese corporations, supporting Japan’s energy transition and long-term energy security through the stable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
“Beyond the energy sector, he has championed environmental collaborations involving Japanese universities and organisations, focusing on reforestation and biodiversity conservation projects,” the embassy said in a statement.
The embassy added that Abang Johari’s efforts have also extended to academic and youth exchange programmes, which have helped deepen ties and mutual understanding between Japan and Sarawak.
“His dedication and leadership have left a lasting impact on the friendship and cooperation between Japan and Malaysia,” it added.
