KOTA SAMARAHAN: The conferral of the 2025 Imperial Autumn Decorations – The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Government of Japan to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg signifies Japan’s recognition of Sarawak’s forward-looking policies.
Abang Johari said he is the first figure from Sarawak to receive the honour.
“This week I will be going to Japan to receive the award. It is not a personal recognition for me, but for the state of Sarawak, as it shows that the world acknowledges the policies we have implemented,” he said.

He explained that Japan greatly appreciates Sarawak’s approach in the energy sector, particularly its emphasis on the development of hydrogen and renewable energy, which are currently being explored in collaboration with several Japanese companies, including Mitsubishi.
“We also have the Low Carbon Blueprint, which has been recognised by Japan. This shows that Sarawak’s policies are in line with global priorities for sustainable development and the green economy,” he told reporters officiating University Malaysia Sarawak’s 29th Convocation Ceremony here today (Nov 4).
Abang Johari added that recognition from an industrially advanced nation like Japan provides fresh motivation for Sarawak to continue playing an active role in exploring new technologies and strengthening its green economy in the future.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Government and Emperor of Japan for the honour.
“I would like to thank the Government of Japan, especially the Emperor, for conferring upon me the Order of the Rising Sun.
“I did not expect to receive such a prestigious award, but I was informed about it a month ago,” he said.
At the same time, Abang Johari shared that Sarawak is also collaborating with Japan on forest replanting projects using fast-growing tree species that act as carbon absorbers and biomass sources for future industries.
“This is Sarawak’s approach. Japan has been working closely with us, and I sincerely appreciate this recognition as it truly represents Sarawak and its leadership, which align with today’s global priorities,” he added.
Earlier, the Premier was conferred The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Government of Japan in recognition of his outstanding contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between Japan and Malaysia.
In a statement, the Embassy of Japan said Abang Johari is among the recipients of the 2025 Imperial Autumn Decorations, an honour presented by the government of the Land of the Rising Sun.
